Panthers Shoot 5-Under at Brickyard Collegiate

MACON, GA. – Georgia State shot its lowest-round in a nearly a year and stands in sixth entering Sunday's final round of the seventh annual Brickyard Collegiate Championship. Four Panthers shot par or better on Saturday as Georgia State shot a 5-under, 283, its lowest round since the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic last October.

Juniors Davin White and Damon Stephenson paced the Panthers with rounds of 70, while freshman Nathan Mallonee shot 71. Defending champion Jonathan “J.J.” Grey shot 72, with junior Tyler Gruca rounding out the starting line-up with a 73.

“We got off to an incredible start today and really played well all day,” head coach Joe Inman said. “We are starting to play the type of golf we thought we were capable of before the season began. Our team is seeing that it can compete with some of the best teams in the nation.

“The goal now for Sunday is start the same way we did today and then see if we can continue to take it low. If we can do that, it will give us a ton of momentum heading into our own tournament next week.”

Grey shared low medalist honors with Georgia's Sam Straka last year en route to his second-straight victory to begin his collegiate career. He enters the final round at 2-under par following an opening round 70 and tied for 13th. He made four birdies during the season-round.

White is tied for Grey for 13th at 2-under after shooting 33 on this opening nine. Both are six-strokes off the lead. Grey was five-strokes back last year when he came from behind to share the title.

Mallonee, who is making his collegiate debut, also shot 3-under on his opening nine and stands tied for 31st after making four birdies.

Stephenson rebounded from a first-round 77 with his 2-under par round that featured four birdies, including pair to finish his round. He is tied for 37th entering the final round.

Gruca also rebounded nicely after shooting 78 on Friday, making four birdies to move into a tie for 56th.

Senior Grant Cagle, competing as an individual, is tied for 70th following a second round 4-over, 76. He stands at 10-over entering the final round.

Host Mercer shot an impressive 16-under, 272, to take a one-stroke lead at 20-under entering the final round. Georgia Tech is second at 19-under, followed by Virginia Tech in third at 11-under. South Florida is fourth at 9-under, followed by Georgia at 4-under. The Panthers will be paired with the Bulls and Bulldogs on Sunday, standing in sixth at 1-over.

Georgia Tech's Ollie Schneiderjans holds the individual lead at 8-under following a second-round 69. Mercer's Emmanuel Kountakis and Virginia Tech's Scott Vincent are second at 7-under, with Georgia Tech's Seth Reeves and Mercer's Hans Reimers in fourth at 6-under.
