Gruca's 65 Leads Panthers at AutoTrader.com Collegiate

DULUTH, GA. – Georgia State senior Tyler Gruca shot a second-round 7-under 65 as the Panthers finished the opening day of the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic at 11-under in third place on Monday. Gruca's round was a tournament-low and just one-stroke off of the Berkeley Hills Country Club course record.

Gruca made six birdies and an eagle on his way to a career-best round. He opened the day with a 1-over 73. The senior is tied for second just one off the lead of South Florida's Chase Koepka. Koepka, who is ranked No. 13 by Golfweek, shot 68-69 on the opening day of the GSU-hosted event.

Sun Belt rival South Alabama opened play with rounds of 283 and 280 to stand at 13-under with the lead entering Tuesday's final round. No. 28 South Florida is second at 12-under par, followed by the Panthers in third. Chattanooga, which shot a tournament-record 15-under 273 in the afternoon stands in fourth. The Mocs had three players shoot 67 in the afternoon to move to 10-under. Ole Miss and VCU are tied for fifth at 4-under.

“It was a great day all-around,” head coach Joe Inman said. “The course was in wonderful shape and we saw some really great scoring conditions.

“I really like the position we are in entering the final round. Tyler Gruca really put us on his back in the second-round and gave us a chance to win our home tournament on Tuesday. I am looking forward to giving it our all during the final 18 holes.”

Freshman Nathan Mallonee began the day with a career-low 69 and followed with a 72 in the afternoon to stand at 3-under and tied for 10th.

Junior Damon Stephenson fired rounds of 70 and 72 to sit at 2-under and tied for 13th with 18 holes to play. Fellow junior Davin White is 2-over after rounds of 72 and 74, tied for 35th entering the final round.

Sophomore Jonathan “J.J.” Grey is tied for 46th. After opening the day with a 1-under 71, Grey shot 77 in the afternoon and is 4-over entering the final round.

Georgia State has its entire roster playing in this week's 84-man event. Senior Victor Lavin, competing as an individual is tied for 18th after rounds of 70 and 73 to stand at 1-over.

Senior Ross Mclister, also competing as an individual, shot a career-low 68 in the second-round to move into a tie for 35th following a first-round 78.

Senior Kevin Lee fired a pair of 75s and is tied for 65th, while fellow senior Grant Cagle shot rounds of 79 and 75 to stand tied for 77th entering the final day.

Koepka holds a one-stroke lead over Gruca, South Alabama's Michael Garretson, Georgia Southern's Scott Wolfes and Chattanooga's Liam Johnson, who is ranked 10th in Golfstat.

Wolfes finished tied for second in last year's event, leading the Eagle to victory. Georgia Southern is eight entering Tuesday's final round.

Troy's Clay Vannoy had the shot of the day, making a hole-in-one on the par-3, 8th hole. It was Vannoy's first-ever hole in one as he shot a 3-under 69, including a 32 on the front nine of his second round. He is tied for 18th entering the final round.

The field includes three top 50 squads in the latest Golfweek rankings, along with 11 teams ranked in the top 100.

Live scoring of the final round will be available at Golfstat.com. All three days of the event are open to area golf fans and admission will be free.
