ATLANTA--Stellar performances
from its freshmen and sophomores led the Georgia State women's tennis team to a
successful weekend at the Atlanta Classic, hosted by GSU at the Sharon Lester
Tennis Center.
Leading
the way were sophomore Chaimaa Roudami and freshman Natallia Vavulina who
posted undefeated records in singles and doubles throughout the weekend
tournament. Both went a perfect 3-0 in singles and doubles play to begin the
fall season for Georgia State. Doubles play also paced GSU at the Atlanta
Classic as all of the team's pairings earned perfect 3-0 records in their flights.
Roudami
took all three of her singles victories in straight sets, beginning the
tournament with a 6-1, 6-3 win vs. North Florida's Melanie Aguirre. The
Casablanca, Morocco, native also dispatched Emory's Emma Taylor 6-1, 6-1 and
UAB's Elaine Simon 6-4, 6-1 to round out her undefeated singles weekend.
Vavulina breezed to three singles victories by first knocking off North Florida's
Taylor Hollander 6-1, 6-1, on the first day and Emory's Marissa Levine 6-3, 6-1
and UAB's Caroline Faught 6-0, 6-1 on the following days.
Vavulina
paired with junior Maryna Kozachenko to win the Panther Flight, the top doubles
flight at the Atlanta Classic, for Georgia State by winning all three matches
convincingly. Roudami paired with freshman Linn Timmermann to win three doubles
matches and capture the Blue Flight title. Senior Whitney Byrd and sophomore
Masa Grgan took home the Pounce Flight title while sophomore Megan Nelms and
sophomore Phoebe Chiem won the White Flight.
Grgan,
Kozachenko and Timmermann all earned 2-1 records in singles play on the
weekend.
The
Panthers, led by sixth-year head coach Miha Lisac, next host the Southern Shootout which will also take place at the
Sharon Lester Tennis Center. Matches will begin on Friday, Sept. 21 and
continue throughout the weekend. Georgia State welcomes in two teams that
finished last year ranked in the ITA Women's Team National Rankings. Georgia
Tech (#20) and South Florida (#43) join NC State to form a high-profile field
for this weekend's tournament. Admission to all GSU women's tennis matches is
