Freshman Jonathan Grey Shares Victory at Brickyard Collegiate

Macon, Ga. - Georgia State freshman Jonathan Grey shared low medalist honors with Georgia's Sam Straka to earn his second straight victory on Sunday afternoon at the Brickyard Collegiate and lead the Panthers to a tie for 11th place.

Grey, ranked fourth by GolfStat and No. 11 by Golfweek entering the weekend, shot a final round 3-under, 69, his sixth consecutive round of par or better in his first season at Georgia State. He birdied two of his final four holes to share the victory with Straka, who shot a final round 64 for the Bulldogs.

Grey shot his second 67 of the year on Saturday and is averaging 69.0 strokes through six rounds this year. He became the first Panther since Joel Sjoholm in 2008 to win multiple events in a season. Sjoholm went on to become Georgia State's first-ever First Team All-American that season.

"I was once again extremely impressed by Jonathan's play today," commented head coach Joe Inman. "Coming into the season I knew he was going to make an impact on our line-up, but I could never have imagined he would win his first two collegiate tournaments. I am very proud of him and look forward to continuing to watch him grow.

"Our team fought hard all weekend. Although our finish was not exactly what we had hoped for, we learned a lot this weekend that we can use going into our own tournament next weekend."

Georgia State shot a final round 297 to finish 23-over for the 54-hole event.

Sophomore Davin White finished strong with a final round 2-under 70 to finish 2-over for the tournament and in a tie for 22nd. White made four birdies, shooting 2-under on the second nine.

Junior Kevin Lee shot a final round 79 to finish tied for 68th at 14-over. Lee eagled the par 4 15th hole but struggled on the second nine, shooting 42.

Junior Tyler Gruca also shot 79 to finish tied for 69th at 15-over. A pair of double bogeys derailed Gruca's final round.

Junior Grant Cagle rounded out the Panthers line-up with a final round 80 to finish at 19-over, tied for 79th.

Playing as an individual, sophomore Damon Stephenson, who was fighting sickness on Friday, withdrew from the tournament on Saturday and did not compete on Sunday.

No. 4 Georgia won running away at 16-under par following a final round 8-under 27. The Bulldogs finished 14 strokes ahead of No. 15 Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets finished at 2-under. No. 42 North Florida finished third at 1-over, followed by Chattanooga and No. 35 Virginia Tech which tied for fourth. Chattanooga shot a tournament-low 11-under 277 on Sunday and will be among the teams in the GSU-hosted AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic Oct. 15-16.

Georgia's Nicholas Reach finished in third at 7-under, one behind Grey and Straka. He was followed by teammate Lee McCoy in fourth at 6-under. Georgia Tech's Ollie Schniederjans finished alone in fifth at 5-under.

Georgia State will return to action Oct. 15-16 at the Panther-hosted AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic. The second-year event will take place at Berkeley Hills Country Club in Duluth with teams playing 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.

The event is free and open to the public. A college-am benefiting the program will take place on Sunday afternoon. Fans interested in playing can call the golf office or visit the website for more information.
