State junior Abigail Tere-Apisah won her opening match of the consolation round
7-5, 6-1 against Aeriel Ellis of the University of Texas, but fell in the
second round to end her run at the 2012 Riviera/ITA Singles All-American
Championships.
Tere-Apisah,
the No. 23-ranked player in the ITA Women's Preseason Singles rankings,
defeated the No. 20-ranked Ellis in straight sets before falling to the No. 4-ranked
Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar in the second round. Tere-Apisah fell 6-2, 6-0 to
Sanchez-Quintanar of Texas A&M.
The
junior from Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, returns to Atlanta following the ninth
victory of her career over a nationally-ranked singles opponent. She begins
preparations for the ITA Southeast Regional Championships on Oct. 19 while the
rest of her teammates compete at the Roberta Allison Fall Classic in
Tuscaloosa, Ala., this weekend.
Tere-Apisah,
the No. 23-ranked player in the ITA Women's Preseason Singles rankings, was one
of a select few to be invited to the main draw of the All-American
Championships. She earned the invite after becoming the first GSU tennis player
in school history to earn All-American honors last season.
