Greensboro, N.C. – Georgia State jumped three spots in the
standings on Sunday to finish tied for eighth at the UNCG Bridgestone Golf
Collegiate, played on the East Course at the Grandover Resort. The Panthers
shot a final round 295 as four members of the team finished among the top 30.
Georgia State finished among a group of seven teams separated by
just five strokes. The Panthers finished just two strokes back of a tie for
fourth at 26-over par.
Freshman Jonathan Grey, ranked No. 19 in the country, finished
tied for 19th at 5-over par. He shot a final round 1-over 73 to
finish the fall with a 71.17 scoring average. In four tournaments, Grey
finished among the top 20 in all with a pair of victories.
“I was proud of the way we finished,” commented head coach Joe
Inman. “If it wasn't for a tough start in the first round on Saturday, we would
have been right where we wanted to be.
“Regardless, we had a very good fall season and have put our
selves in prime position entering the spring to make a run at the NCAA
Regionals in May. We know what we need to work on the next three months to be
ready for Sawgrass the first week of February.”
A trio of Panthers tied for 30th at 7-over par.
Sophomore Davin White fired a final round 3-over, 75, that included three
birdies. Sophomore Damon Stephenson tied for the low Panther round of the day
with a final round 73 that included an eagle at the par 5 sixth hole. Tyler
Gruca finished with a final round 74 after shooting the Panthers low round of
the tournament on Saturday afternoon, a 2-under, 70.
Junior Grant Cagle rounded out the Panthers line-up with a final
round 7-over 79 to finish the tournament 17-over and alone in 60th.
He also eagled the par 5 sixth hole, but two triple bogeys derailed his round.
Junior Ross Mclister, competing as an individual, shot his best
round of the tournament, a 3-over 75 to finish at 16-over and tied for 55th.
No. 47 Mississippi State overcame a one-stroke deficit to earn a
four-stroke win over No. 50 Chattanooga. The Bulldogs shot a final round 1-over
289 to finish as the lone team under par at 3-under. Iowa State finished third
at 2-over, followed by a group of three teams tied for fourth at 22-over: No.
28 Ole Miss, No. 42 Virginia Tech and NC State.
No. 88 Chris Robb of Chattanooga earned low medalist honors by one
stroke over Mississippi State's Axel Boasson. Robb finished at 9-under
following a final round 69, while Boasson shot 72 over the final 18 holes. Iowa
State's Scott Fernandez, ranked 16th in the country, and Ole Miss'
Blake Morris, ranked 68th, finished tied for third at 4-under.
Mississippi State's Chad Ramey rounded out the top five at 3-under par.
Georgia State will head into the off-season until returning to the
course for the SeaBest Seafood Invitational hosted by Jacksonville University
on the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass the first week of February.
