ATLANTA – Former
Georgia State men's golfer Ty Harris finished with a final round 67 to tie for
seventh place and advance to the second stage of PGA Tour Q-School on Friday at
Pensacola Country Club in Pensacola, Fla. Harris is one of three former
Panthers playing in this week's PGA Tour Q-School, looking to advance to the tour
for the 2013 season.
Harris played
conservatively, making four birdies and just one bogey during the final round
and finished two ahead of the cut of the top 18 and ties.
The Longwood,
Fla. native will now wait to find out which of six sites he will play either
Nov. 13-16 or Nov. 14-17 with an opportunity to advance to the final stage and
play for a spot on the PGA Tour or Web.com Tour in 2013.
Harris opened
play on Tuesday with a 67 and followed it with a 68 on Wednesday. He put
himself in prime position on Thursday with a 4-under 66. He finished the
72-hole event at 12-under, just four off the lead.
Harris has
advanced to the final stage of PGA Tour Q-School in the past (2010) and ended
up with spot on the Nationwide (now Web.com) Tour after his successful run. A
shoulder injury derailed his 2011 season before playing well on the Canadian
Tour this past summer.
Jonathan Fricke,
who was scheduled to compete in his third round on the Mountain Course at
Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga. withdrew from the tournament following
rounds of 72 and 76.
Derek Oakey shot
a third round 4-over 74 and stands tied for 65th at Florence Country Club in
Florence, S.C. Oakey shot 74 in round one and 72 in round two. His final round
will come on Saturday.
PGA Tour Q-School
is a three stage process. The top 25 and ties in the third stage automatically
earn their PGA Tour cards for the following season.
The European PGA
Tour season is still going on, but it is already known that Joel Sjoholm has
qualified for the tour again next year. Others looking to qualify later this
fall will be Mark Haastrup, Steven Tiley, Tom Sherreard and Tobias Rosendahl.
GeorgiaStateSports.com
will continue to update the progress of all three golfers as the week goes on.
