ATLANTA--Despite
rallying from a one-goal deficit in the second half, the Georgia State men's
soccer team fell 3-1 Saturday night against Northeastern at the GSU Soccer
Complex.
The game was tightly contested at the onset and went into half
tied 0-0 before both teams began to push numbers forward in the second half.
Northeastern struck first early in the second half before GSU's William
Mellors-Blair tied the game at 1-1. Mellors-Blair corralled a loose ball from
45 yards out and raced past his defender to earn a one-on-one chance with
Northeastern goalkeeper Oliver Blum. Mellors-Blair bent a right-footed shot
into the net past the charging Blum to tie the match at 1-1 in the 60th
minute.
The Panthers (4-8-0, 1-4-0) conceded a goal less than three
minutes later and could not fight back from the deficit. Northeastern's Don
Anding provided the game-winning goal after he ripped a left-footed shot
towards the left side of the net that glanced off GSU senior goalkeeper Vincent
Foermer's hand and trickled into the net. Foermer's diving attempt was one of
many sprawling efforts on the night as the Seevetal, Germany, native finished
with three saves in the losing effort.
Northeastern senior Donovan Fayd'Herbe de Maudave netted the last
goal of the night off an assist from Don Anding at the 78:14 mark. Northeastern
freshman Terence Carter buried a low cross from Anding in the 53rd
minute to put the Huskies (9-1-2, 4-0-1) up by a goal early in the second half.
The Panthers applied pressure offensively late in the second half
looking to cut the deficit to one. Mellors-Blair had a chance at the 77:59 mark
and 78:38 mark denied by Blum. Redshirt junior Caleb Kernan had an excellent
header stopped by a diving Blum in the 85th minute as well.
Shots were 12-10 in favor of Northeastern while Georgia State held
a 5-3 lead in corner kicks. Blum had three saves, all in the last 14 minutes,
in the match.
