Franklin, Tenn. - Georgia State shot a final round 300 to finish tied for 12th in its opening event of the fall on Sunday at the Mason Rudolph Championship. Sophomore Tyler Gruca led the Panthers with a tie for 43rd.
Gruca, the lone Panther to play in every event last season, made a pair of birdies en route to a final round 75. After opening the tournament on Friday with a 71, Gruca shot back-to-back 75's on the weekend.
"I really thought that we would play better today," commented head coach Joe Inman. "Everyone on the team now knows what they need to work on and I know we will be better prepared for our next tournament at Haig Point next week."
True freshman Davin White shot a final round 76 to finish tied for 51st. White, who played in the top spot for the Panthers entering the weekend, opened the tournament with rounds of 76 and 72.
Senior Clemens Dvorak made three birdies on Sunday to shoot a final round 75. Opening with rounds of 76 and 74, the junior college transfer finished tied for 55th.
True freshman Damon Stephenson also made three birdies en route to a final round 76. Making his Panther debut, Stephenson finished the 54-hole event tied for 72nd.
Senior Jared Cagle shot a final round 74, his best of the event, to finish 74th.
Sam Jandel, also making his Panther debut and competing as an individual this week, finished strong, shooting 69 on Sunday with three birdies to place tied for 70th.
Middle Tennessee shot 5-under par on Sunday to hold off Ole Miss by one stroke. The Raiders finished the tournament at 8-under, with the Rebels at 7-under. Georgia Southern finished alone in third at 4-under, followed by Oklahoma in fourth at 1-under. Memphis, which shot 8-under in the final round, finished fifth at 4-over.
Middle Tennessee's Hunter Green shot 67 in the final round to win by two strokes over Davidson's John Skeadas. Green finished the 54-hole event at 8-under par. Billy Brozovich and Joe David of Ole Miss tied for third at 5-under, followed by Georgia Southern's Lewis Gruber in fifth at 4-under.
The Panthers will return to the course Oct. 3-4 at the Rees Jones Intercollegiate on Daufuskie Island in South Carolina. Live scoring will be available via Golfstat.com.
