Norfolk, Va. - The No. 3 seeded Georgia State women's tennis team dropped a heartbreaker to No. 1 seed William & Mary, 4-2, Sunday in the thrilling CAA finals at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion.
Georgia State (15-4) finishes the season after falling just short in the CAA finals against No. 44 ranked William and Mary. The Panthers were ranked No. 65 in the ITA rankings before their two wins in the CAA tournament, including the win over No. 35 VCU on Saturday.
The Panthers were just one win short of tying the school record for most wins and an NCAA bid for the second time in three seasons.
With the Panthers trailing 3-2, Anik Cepeda won in straight sets to clinch the CAA title against GSU's Katerina Gresova, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 4 singles. Gresova finishes her senior season with an 11-7 record in singles and earned 34 career victories in her four seasons.
Georgia State won the doubles point to take a 1-0 early lead. Kir Kemp and Martina Ondrackova lost 6-8 against Lauren Sabacinski and Jeltje Loomans at No. 3 doubles.
Tereza Lerova and Katerina Gresova won 8-4 against Katie Kargl and Marlen Mesgarzadeh at No. 2 doubles. Lerova and Gresova won three straight games to win the match.
Abigail Tere-Apisah and Maryna Kozachenko clinched the doubles point for GSU after winning 8-5 against Hope Johnson and Anik Cepeda at No. 1 doubles. Tere-Apisah and Kozachenko earned three breaks, including the clinching game.
William and Mary tied the match at 1-1 after Jeltje Loomans won in straight sets against Kozachenko, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.
The Tribe took a 2-1 lead after Marlen Mesgarzadeh won in straight sets against Lerova, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 singles.
Georgia State tied the match at 2-2 when Tere-Apisah won in straight sets against Hope Johnson, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1 singles. Tere-Apisah improved to 14-2 in singles, winning all three conference tournament matches.
William and Mary regained the lead for good at 3-2 after Lauren Sabacinski won in straight sets against Kemp, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5 singles.
One match went unfinished as Ondrackova was trailing in the second set 2-3 against Katie Kargl at No. 6 singles. Ondrackova lost the first-set tiebreaker, 6-7 (5-7).
