Wilmington, N.C. - The Georgia State men's golf team shot a final round 326 to finish 10th at the Seahawk Invitational on Monday. Senior walk-on Tommy Caswell led the Panthers in a tie for 33rd place.
Played on the par 72, 6,918-yard Country Club of Landfall, the 54-hole tournament was played on the same course as the 2010 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship.
After struggling to an opening round 314 on Sunday morning, the Panthers rebounded to shoot 295 in the afternoon. Conditions caused scores to increase significantly on Monday as winds were steady at 25 mph, with gusts over 30 mph.
"It was a tough day for everyone on the course," commented head coach Joe Inman. "I thought we built some momentum on Sunday afternoon, but we were not able to keep it going today. I look forward to being able to get back to Atlanta, get some practice in and prepare for our next tournament."
Caswell led the Panthers with a final round 78 to finish at 15-over. The senior opened with rounds of 79 and 74 on Sunday.
Senior Brent Paul finished tied for 41st, shooting a final round 81, moving up from a tie for 45th.
Freshmen Victor Lavin, Ross McLister and Tyler Gruca tied for 43rd. Lavin shot a final round 85, while McLister shot 83 and Gruca shot 84. Each finished at 21-over par.
Host UNC Wilmington rallied with a final round 296 earn the team title. The Seahawks were in third entering the final round of play, but were one of just three teams to break 300 over the last 18 holes.
The Seahawks earned a four-stroke victory over Liberty, which finished at 19-over. Wake Forest and East Carolina tied for third at 24-over par, followed by South Carolina at 26-over.
UNC Wilmington's Thomas Bass earned low medalist honors, shooting even par for the tournament after a final round 72. Liberty's Preston Dembowiak finished second at 1-over, followed by a tie for third between South Carolina's Wesley Bryan and Wake Forest's Charlie Harrison. There was a six-way tie for fifth.
The Panthers will return to action at the Seminole Intercollegiate hosted by Florida State, March 11-13 at Southwood Country Club in Tallahassee, Fla.
