Freshman Tyler Gruca Leads Panthers at Gator Invitational

Gainesville, Fla. - The Georgia State men's golf team finished in 14th at the SunTrust Gator Invitational on Sunday afternoon. Freshman walk-on Tyler Gruca shot his third straight 73 and finished in a tie for 29th.

The Panthers shot a final round 305, after opening with rounds of 308 and 298 on the par 70, 6,701-yard course on Saturday.

Gruca made three birdies in his final round to finish at 9-over par for the event. It marked the third time in six tournaments that the walk-on has finished as the top Panther.

Freshman Victor Lavin shot a final round 76 to finish at 17-over par and in a tie for 48th. Lavin shot 77 and 74 during the 36 holes of competition on Saturday.

Grant Cagle, one of three freshmen in the field for the Panthers, shot a final round 77 and finished in a tie for 55th at 19-over par.

Senior Alan Fowler shot a final round 80, which included a pair of birdies, and finished alone in 72nd place.

Senior Brent Paul shot a final round 79 and finished tied for 73rd.

Host Florida, ranked third in the country, shot a final round 281 to win by nine strokes over No. 13 Auburn. The Tigers shot a final round 284 and finished at 13-over par. No. 6 LSU finished in third at 22-over, with No. 44 UNF in fourth at 26-over. No. 29 UCF rounded out the top five at 27-over par.

Florida's Phillip Choi, Andres Echavarria, Bank Vongvanij and Florida State's Drew Kittleson tied for the top spot at even par. Choi and Vongvanij each shot a final round 68, while Kittleson shot 69. Auburn's Blayne Barber and Niclas Carlsson tied for fifth at 1-over par.

Florida has now won the event eight years in a row. The list of now-PGA Tour stars that have won the event includes Paul Azinger, Brad Faxon, Jodie Mudd, David Toms, Chris DiMarco and Graeme McDowell.

The Panthers will return to the course on March 27 & 28 at the Seahawk Intercollegiate, hosted by CAA rival UNC Wilmington. The two-day 54-hole event will take place at the Country Club of Landfall.
