Greensboro, N.C. - Coming off a career-best finish just one week ago, Georgia State sophomore Tyler Gruca did it again, finishing tied for fifth at the rain-shortened UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate on Sunday afternoon.
With back-to-back rounds of 72, Gruca finished at even par, giving him his third career top 10 and first career top five finish. He finished Sunday's round with four birdies and four bogeys to lead the Panthers.
"I am extremely proud of the way Tyler played today," commented head coach Joe Inman. "He is showing everyday why he is the number one player in our line-up and I look forward to more big things from him this spring."
As a team, the Panthers stumbled a little on Sunday, shooting 301 to finish the tournament tied for 12th, but were only 11 strokes off of second place. GSU was tied for sixth entering the day's play.
Senior Clemens Dvorak and sophomore Grant Cagle tied for 43rd at 7-over par. Following an opening round 73, Dvorak shot 78, while Cagle improved by one stroke, shooting 75 after an opening round 76.
Freshman Davin White also improved by a stroke, shooting 76 after firing a 77 on Saturday to finish tied for 56th.
Rounding out the line-up was redshirt-sophomore Sam Jandel who tied for 75th following an 81 on Sunday.
Sophomore Ross Mclister, competing as an individual, finished tied for 34th following back-to-back rounds of 75. Fellow sophomore Victor Lavin was just one stroke behind, finished tied for 43rd at 7-over.
Iowa State was the only team to break par on Sunday to earn the title at 6-over par following a 3-under 285. NC State finished in second at 11-over, followed by Virginia Tech and Mississippi State at 15-over. South Carolina finished in fifth at 16-over. A total of just 27 strokes separated the entire 15-team field.
NC State's Albin Choi finished at 5-under for the tournament to earn a two-stroke victory over Michigan's Matt Thompson. Iowa State's Sam Daley and UNCG's Andy Knox finished tied for third at 2-under. Gruca shared fifth with Pepperdine's Josh Anderson and VCU's Chase Sargent.
The Panthers will have exactly three months off before returning to the course for the JU Invitational on the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass on Jan. 30.
