Men's Golf Opens Season at Mason Rudolph

Franklin, Tenn. - The Georgia State men's golf team opened the fall season with an opening round 306 at the Mason Rudolph Championship on Friday afternoon. The Panthers stand in 17th place after the opening round.

Senior Alan Fowler led the Panthers with a first round 75 and tied for the team lead with a pair of birdies. Fowler is tied for 59th with 36 holes to play.

Walk-on Tyler Gruca, making his first career appearance in a collegiate event shot 76, including a second-nine 36, birding his 17th hole (hole No. 8). Gruca stands in a tied for 66th in his debut.

Senior Brent Paul opened the event with a 77 and is tied for 71st. Paul shot even par with a pair of birdies on the team's first nine holes, but stumbled on his second nine.

Redshirt-junior Jared Cagle shot 78 and is tied for 73rd, while freshman Bryan Fox, also making his collegiate debut, shot an 82 and is tied for 88th.

Memphis, which has three players in the top six, leads the 17-team field after an opening round 10-under par 274. The Tigers lead Oklahoma by three strokes. The Sooners shot a 7-under par 277, while Ole Miss was the only other team to shoot under par, finishing at 2-under.

Oklahoma's Will Kropp leads the field after shooting a 6-under par 65 in the first round. Memphis' Jack Belote finished with a 5-under par 66 to stand in second, while Western Carolina's Ryan Booth stands in third, shooting a first round 67.

Tee times begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday off both the first and tenth tees. Sunday's tee times will begin at 7:30 a.m.
