Macon, Ga. - The Georgia State men's soccer team (3-1-2) battled hard against in-state rival Mercer, but fell 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. Junior Jacob Hamilton scored the lone goal in the 62nd minute, for his first goal of the season.
Georgia State went down early in the game, after letting in an early goal in the 10th minute on Ian Cameron's free kick into the box that defender Josh Shutter one touched into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
The Panthers had a couple of opportunities in the first half, with their best chance coming in the 20th minute as junior Ayokunle Lumpkin had a header at the goal, but Bears keeper Brett Petricek made the save.
Georgia State ended the half, leading in shots 8-to-5, but down on the scoreboard 1-0.
In the 60th minute, sophomore Alex Vivanco picked up his second yellow card of the day and had to be sent off, leaving the Panthers a man down with 30 minutes remaining still down 1-0.
The Panthers responded getting the equalizer from Hamilton after a perfect cross from sophomore Gimel Gordon. Hamilton just got a header on the ball to beat the keeper to tie the score at 1-1.
With six minutes remaining in the game, the Bears answered, scoring the game winner from Shutter off a corner kick.
Georgia State finished the game with 12 shots, including five on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Vincent Foermer had four saves and Lumpkin led the team with four shots, including two on goal.
Mercer improved to 3-1-1 on the season.
Georgia State returns to action when they open up conference play this Saturday against Delaware at 1 p.m. in Panthersville.
