Georgia State men's golf, led by an All-Tournament effort from junior Alan Fowler, finished their season with a fifth place finish at the 2010 Colonial Athletic Association championship Sunday on the 6,679 yard, par 70 Cascades course at the Homestead in Hot Springs, Va.
"We're disappointed to be going home," said Georgia State head coach Joe Inman. "But I take my hat off to our guys. They fought hard right to the end and overcame a lot this season with the injuries that we had. They performed well, and we're excited about the future."
Fowler earned his first career All-Tournament honor thanks to a tie for fourth place, moving up two places with a final round 73 (+3). The fourth place finish ties his career best, set this year at the Samford Intercollegiate.
The Gainesville, Ga. native becomes the ninth Panther in school history to earn All-Tournament honors, and extends Georgia State's streak of having at least one All-Tournament performer in each of the last five years, dating back to 2006, the Panthers' first year as a CAA member.
Senior Tom Sherreard wrapped up his collegiate career with a final top-10 finish, bringing his career total to seven. Sherreard fired a 74 (+4) on the final day, moving up two places to eighth overall. His finish is the second-best of his career at the CAA Championship.
"Tom was a great leader for us both on and off the course," said Inman. "I have confidence that he'll be very successful moving forward. We were lucky to have him and wish him all the best."
The Maidstone, England native goes down as one of the most decorated golfers in conference history. This season, he was named to the CAA 25th Anniversary team, representing the second youngest golfer on the team.
Sherreard made the All-CAA First team twice, including this season, the second team twice, the All-Tournament team once, and was named CAA Scholar Athlete of the Year twice (this year's award is still to be determined).
Sophomore Jared Cagle earned a top-20, improving on each of the three days with a 75 (+5) in the final round. The top-20 represents the best finish of Cagle's career. His previous best was a tie for 26th at the Turtle Bay Resort Invitational.
Junior Brent Paul finished tied for 26th with his final round 77 (+7). Junior Alex Castro came in with an 81 (+11) on the final day to finish 51st.
Towson won the team competition and will earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Regional. Towson opened the tournament with a 283 (+3), the low round of the event, and never looked back, finishing with an 11 shot victory.
Justin Martinson of Delaware earned medalist honors with a total of 213 (+3) highlighted by an opening round 69 (-1), the only under par round of the tournament.
