GSU Men's Tennis Upsets #4 Old Dominion to Advance to CAA semifinal

Norfolk, Va. – The Georgia State men's tennis team (15-5) upset Old Dominion, 4-1, in the quarterfinals of the 2010 CAA Championship on Friday night at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. The Panthers have won eight-straight matches and will face #1 seed William & Mary tomorrow at 10 a.m.

Senior Henri Mangin clinched the match with a straight-sets win at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-2, over Fahoum Fahoum. Mangin improves to 13-0 at No. 5 singles and an overall record of 15-3 in singles play.

Georgia State became the first team since 2003 to advance to the semifinals without being one of the top four seeds.

“This is our biggest win of the season.  We beat a very good ODU team in their house tonight without the services of Calvin Kemp.  Our guys are playing with a chip on their shoulder as we feel that we are a better team than some may think.  This conference has been a 4 team race for quite some time so it is nice to break into a semi-final,” said head coach Chase Hodges.

“We face a tough challenge with #1 William and Mary tomorrow at 10am.  The only thing that I can guarantee is that we will fight for every point and play with high intensity.  Our trademark all season has been that we are a very scrappy team.  We will see what happens and the guys look forward to playing a great W&M squad,” added Hodges.

The Panthers claimed a tight doubles point after winning two of the three doubles matches. The team of Victor Valente/Henri Mangin clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 victory against Krzysztof Muzalewski/Yakov Diskin at No. 2 doubles.

Georgia State went up 2-0 with a quick victory by freshman Victor Valente, 6-0, 6-2, over Benjamin Chomette. Valente improves to 15-5 in singles play and has won seven matches in a row.

The lead expanded to 3-0 after Juan Pablo Gutierrez won in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-0, over Yakov Diskin at No. 3 singles. Gutierrez has also won seven matches in a row.

Georgia State quickly turns around and plays #1 seed William & Mary tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Folks-Stevens Tennis Center.
