Fowler's Career-Best Helps Panthers to Fifth Place

Junior Alan Fowler's career-best finish, a tie for fourth, helped Georgia State men's golf to a fifth place finish out of 15 teams Tuesday at the Samford Intercollegiate on the par-72 Limestone Golf Club in Oneonta, Ala.

"We're all fired up about Alan's play this week, he did a great job out there," said Georgia State head coach Joe Inman. "It was a good effort by the whole team this week. Brent played solid golf and had a good finish, Alex continued to play well. We got a lot of work in, and we're happy with the result."

Fowler followed up a career-low 64 in the second round with a final round 71 (-1) to move up three places into a tie for fourth.  The Gainesville, Ga. native missed setting his career-low three-round score by one shot this week, but his 214 (-2) is the lowest posted by any Panther this year.

Junior Brent Paul picked up his best finish of the season, shooting a final round 73 (+1) to earn a share of 11th place. Paul's previous season-best was a T-26 at the Turtle Bay Resort Invitational in the fall.

The Panthers' fifth place finish is the second-best of the year, trailing only a fourth at the Seahawk Intercollegiate last week. Georgia State notched 10 wins, however, which does mark a season-high.

Junior Alex Castro posted a final round 75 (+3) to score his second top-25 in as many weeks, finishing in a tie for 22nd.

Castro's run of strong play began last week at the Seahawk Intercollegiate, where he managed his first career top-10. The Alpharetta, Ga. native's best finish was a T-23 before this season, a mark that he has surpassed in each of the last two events.

Sophomore Jared Cagle posted a 75, his best score of the spring season, to finish in 51st. Walk-on Tommy Caswell wrapped up his debut with an 84 and a share of 72nd.

Vanderbilt and Samford tied for the team championship at 877 (+13), after playing to a dead heat through three holes of sudden death. Samford's Casey O'Toole finished as medalist, shooting 65-66 over the final two rounds to post a 204 (-12) and come away with a seven-stroke victory.

The Panthers return to the course in a few short days at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla. March 11-13. Live stats will be available for the event, and full details will be posted at www.GeorgiaStateSports.com after each round.
