Georgia State finished fourth of 12 at the Seahawk Intercollegiate, with the help of top-10 performances from both senior Tom Sherreard and junior Alex Castro, as play was suspended Tuesday at the par-72 7,058 yard Dye Course at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.
Due to inclement weather, play was called when players were approximately 10 holes into their rounds. Because play was cancelled before rounds were completed, scoring reverts back to the 36-hole mark.
Sherreard and Castro finished six back of medalist Patrick Reed of Augusta State who posted 139 (-5).
Castro earns his best career finish with a T-9, and posted the best round of the tournament for the Panthers', a two-under par 70 in Monday's second round. The Alpharetta, Georgia native's 70 tied his career-best, set at the 2007 Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate and again at the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association Championship.
Sherreard opened the tournament with a 72 to position himself in 10th overall, and moved up one position with a 73 in the afternoon for his 145 (+1). The Maidstone, England native earns his best finish since a season-opening T-4 at the Rees Jones Intercollegiate, and his fifth top-20 of the season.
Junior Alan Fowler picked up his best finish of the season. Fowler earned a share of 18th, after carding a 149 (+5).
Sophomore Jared Cagle carded an opening round 78 (+6) to find himself in a tie for 47th at the end of 18. A second round 77 helped Cagle to a share of 43rd. Cagle's 43rd place finish is his best of the spring.
The Panthers had an opportunity to measure themselves against Colonial Athletic Association competition this week in Wilmington. Georgia State picks up wins over James Madison, William & Mary, VCU, and Drexel, but finished behind UNC Wilmington by two shots.
Georgia State returns to the links on March 12 for the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla.
