Sherreard Leads the Way in Return

Georgia State men's golf finished 11th of 14, led by senior Tom Sherreard's seventh place finish on a one-under par 70, at the Southwood Golf Course in Tallahassee, Fla. on day one of the Seminole Intercollegiate.

"Tom played really well for us today," said Georgia State head coach Joe Inman. "Conditions made scoring a little tough, but we're proud of the guys' effort. We're playing against some really strong talent this week, and hopefully we can come out tomorrow and move up the leaderboard."

Sherreard's 70 equals his season-best, set back at the season-opening Rees Jones Intercollegiate. His seventh place standing puts him within striking distance of a season-best finish, a T-4, also set at the Rees Jones.

The Maidstone, England native is one shot away from a tie for second place and four back of the overall leader.

The Panthers posted a 299 (+15) to settle into 11th at the end of day one. Georgia State has one win, in 2004, an 11th of 15, and a 13th of 15 in three tries at the Seminole Intercollegiate.

Junior Brent Paul had the second-best scoring day for the Panthers, posting a 74 (+3) to land in a tie for 35th place. Paul is looking for continued success after an 11th place result at the Samford Intercollegiate earlier in the week.

Coming off of a career-best fourth place at the Samford Intercollegiate, junior Alan Fowler opened his tournament with a 75 (+4), earning a share of 46th place.

Junior Alex Castro posted a 79 (+8) to claim a share of 63rd. Sophomore Jared Cagle opened the Seminole Intercollegiate with an 82 (+11).

The Panthers have posted back-to-back season-best finishes entering the Seminole Intercollegiate, coming away with a fourth of 12 at the Seahawk Intercollegiate and a fifth of 15 at the Samford Intercollegiate.

Host Florida State leads the tournament by seven strokes after posting an opening round 278 (-6). North Carolina's Jack Fields fired the day's best round, a 66 (-5) to lead the individual contest by three strokes.

Tomorrow, Georgia State will tee off of hole number 10 beginning at 12:30 p.m. for the second round of the Seminole Intercollegiate. Live scoring is available for the tournament at www.GolfStat.com. Full details and results will be posted at www.GeorgiaStateSports.com at the close of competition.
