Senior Tom Sherreard rebounded in the afternoon round with 16 holes of 1-over par golf as Georgia State wrapped up day one in ninth place of 15 teams at the JU Invitational on the par-72 7,122 yard Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass on Monday afternoon. The second round was called due to darkness 6:11 p.m. with golfers having played between 15 and 16 holes.
Georgia State moved up from 12th to ninth in the afternoon round, before played was called. With all five players through at least 15 holes, the Panthers are 20-over for the second round, 57-over for the tournament as playing conditions remained difficult.
At the end of play, senior Tom Sherreard picked up twelve spots into a tie for 14th, one shot back of Old Dominion's Eric Onesi, a player Sherreard may battle for conference medalist in a few short months.
Junior Alan Fowler also improved in the afternoon, moving up 13 places to a tie for 43rd by playing 15 holes in 5-over par.
Alex Castro dropped to T-36 with a 5-over par effort, Brent Paul fell to T-60 with a 10-over par scorecard, and Jared Cagle slipped to T-70.
East Tennessee State and Clemson are tied for first at the end of play at 14-over par. Clemson's Corbin Mills leads the individual contest at 1-over par. After shooting a first round 67, East Carolina's Jake Colley dropped to ninth with a 10-over par effort through 15 holes.
The Panthers were led in round one by a pair of 80s from senior Tom Sherreard and junior Alex Castro on a difficult scoring day. Castro and Sherreard finished the first round in a tie for 26th at +8.
Georgia State posted a team round of 325 (+37) to lead Idaho (+39), USC Upstate (+41), and conference foe Old Dominion (+41).
Sophomore Jared Cagle carded the Panthers' third-best total, 10-over 82 to tie for 51st. Junior Alan Fowler's 83 (+11) gave him a share of 56th at the close of the first round.
Junior Brent Paul found birdies at the par-3 eighth and the par-5 16th, but big numbers on the first and seventh left him in 62nd, at 12-over, heading to the second round.
East Carolina's Jake Colley shot a blistering 67 (-5) to lead the field by a full four shots. Clemson led the team competition at 298 (+10).
Georgia State will take to the course tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m., finishing up round two before moving directly into the final round. Live streaming video of the 17th and hole-by-hole scoring are available at www.GolfStat.com.
