Georgia State men's golf, led by a pair of 72s from juniors Alan Fowler and Alex Castro, finished the first day of the SunTrust Gator Invitational in 12th place after posting a 300-304--604 (+44) at the par-70 6,701 yard Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla. Saturday.

Fowler and Castro sat in a tie for 13th overall at the end of the initial 18. Castro birdied the fifth and ninth holes on the front en route to his 72. Fowler birdied the first hole, playing solidly aside from a stretch of three bogeys in a row on the front.

In the second round, Castro and Fowler slipped into a tie for 34th by following their morning rounds with 76s.

Senior Tom Sherreard carded a 75-76--151 (+11) to find himself in 48th place after the second round. Sherreard is riding a streak of four-straight top-20 finishes dating back to the start of the season.

Junior Brent Paul played his opening round in 11-over par for a 70th place finish, and followed that with a second round 80 to slip to 75th. Sophomore Jared Cagle's 83 (+13) put him 74th, but the Gainesville, Ga. native improved five places with an afternoon round of 76.

Chattanooga led the event at +2, with Florida State and Florida wrapping up one shot back at +3, after the first round. Chattanooga and Florida State faltered in the second round, posting 289 and 291 respectively, giving way to the hosts. Florida leads the event by nine shots at +2.

Florida State's Michael Hebert carded the low round of the day, a 67 (-3), but followed that with a 75 to fall to fourth. Florida's Tyson Alexander, Duke's Julian Sun, and UAB's John Darby share the lead at +1.

The final round of the SunTrust Gator Invitational begins tomorrow at 8 a.m. with live scoring available at www.GolfStat.com. A recap of the day's events will be posted at www.GeorgiaStateSports.com at the close of competition.
