Philadelphia, Pa. - The Georgia State men's soccer team fell just short against Drexel, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Vidas Field. Sophomore Eric Lawrence scored his team leading third goal of the season in the first half.
The Panthers (5-5-3, 2-4-1 CAA) struck first late in the first half after a header from freshman Evan Scott went to Lawrence, who headed the ball into the net to give Georgia State the 1-0 lead. Sophomore Alejandro Reyes was credited with an assist after starting the play with a corner kick, leading to the goal from Lawrence.
Drexel (7-5-1, 3-3 CAA) immediately responded with a penalty kick in the 43rd minute, giving the Dragons the equalizer from Nathan Page.
The first half ended tied at 1-1 with the Panthers taking three shots on goal.
Georgia State had several chances in the second half. In the 59th minute, sophomore Gimel Gordon fired a shot on goa,l but Dragons' keeper Pentii Pussinen made the save.
Just six minutes, later the Panthers had another attempt on goal from Lawrence, but Drexel's keeper made the save.
Drexel found the game winner in the 88th minute when freshman Mark Donohue scored off a clearance to give the Dragons the 2-1 victory.
Lawrence and sophomore Alex Vivanco led the team with two shots on goal apiece. Sophomore goalkeeper Vincent Foermer finished the game with nine saves.
Georgia State will return home to host No. 25 Old Dominion on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in Panthersville.
