Vestavia Hills, Ala. - The Georgia State men's golf team moved up one spot and finished in 11th place at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon at Old Overton Country Club. Senior Brent Paul led the Panthers with a final round 72.
The Panthers shot a final round 305, after opening the tournament with rounds of 303 and 295 on Monday.
Senior Brent Paul fired a final round 72 to finish tied for 38th. Paul led the Panthers with four birdies over the final 18 holes. He opened the tournament with rounds of 75 and 76 on Monday.
Walk-on freshman Tyler Gruca, who shot a second round 70, the Panthers lowest of the event, fired a final round 76 to finish tied for 40th on the par 70, 6936-yard course. Yesterday's second round included four birdies and an eagle.
Senior Alan Fowler fired a final round 77 to finish in 50th place. The Gainesville, Ga. native opened play on Monday with a pair of 76's.
Victor Lavin, who was making his collegiate debut, shot a final round 80 and finished tied for 52nd, while senior Alex Castro, making his season debut, shot a final round 84 to finish tied for 55th.
No. 23 Auburn, which led after the first round, jumped back ahead of No. 1 Florida to win by seven strokes. The Tigers shot a tournament low 273 to finish at 11-under par. The Gators finished at 4-under, followed by host Alabama at 2-under. The Crimson Tide, ranked sixth in the nation, had won the event the previous four times. South Alabama finished a distant fourth at 19-over, followed by UNLV in fifth at 26-over par.
Auburn's Nichlas Carlsson took home the individual title, shooting a final round 70 to win by two strokes over Florida's Tyler McCumber and Alabama's Bobby Wyatt, both ranked in the top 25 in the nation. Carlsson shot the low round of the tournament on Monday morning with a 64 and finished at 8-under par. Florida Bank Vongvanij, the top ranked golfer in the country, finished fourth at 4-under par, followed by Auburn's Michael Hebert at 3-under.
The history of winners at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate is a 'who's who' of golf. Tiger Woods won the in 1994 while playing at Stanford. Other winners include Nolan Henke, David Toms, Rory Sabbatini, Bryce Molder, D.J. Trahan, and Hunter Mahan.
The Panthers will return to the course for their final event of the fall season on October 24th at the U.S. Intercollegiate. The Golf Club of Georgia will serve as the host for the 54-hole tournament.
