Panthers Fall Short Against No. 27 Auburn

AUBURN, ALA. (Feb. 21, 2009)  The Georgia State women's tennis team dropped its fourth match of the season, falling 5-2 to No. 27 Auburn on Saturday afternoon.

Georgia State (3-3) earned the doubles point early with two wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.  Linda Hricistova and Diana Nakic improved to 4-1 on the season with an 8-3 win over Myrthe Molenveld and Whitney Chappell at No. 3.  Katerina Gresova and Martina Nitkova clinched the doubles point and snapped a three-match losing streak with an 8-4 win over No. 20 doubles pair, Melissa Koning and Alex Haney. 

Auburn (3-4)responded quickly in singles competition as No. 30 Alex Haney defeated Martina Nitkova 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 and No. 72 Melissa Koning defeated Dariana Kozmina 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3.  Whitney Chappell earned the Tigers' third point with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Kiara Powell at No. 5 and No. 5 Fani Chifchieva handed Diana Nakic her first loss of the season with an 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 to clinch the win for Auburn.

Katerina Gresova won the final match of the day with a 6-4, 5-7 (11-9) win over Myrthe Molenveld at No. 4.

Georgia State returns to the court on Friday, March 6 with a home match against Troy at 2 p.m.
