Senior Tom Sherreard finished in a tie for fourth place, leading Georgia State men's golf to sixth place of twelve teams at the Rees Jones Intercollegiate at the Jones Signature Course on Daufuskie Island, S.C. Tuesday.
Sherreard tamed the 7,380 yard par-72 course with a 70 (-2) in the final round, good for the second-best round of the day. Sherreard's 70 was one of only five under-par rounds posted on Tuesday in a field of 60 golfers.
The Maidstone, England native earns a share of fourth place with a three round total of 76-72-70-218 (+2), four shots behind eventual champion Paul Woodbury of South Carolina. Woodbury and teammate George Bryan IV tied at 2-under par. Woodbury defeated Bryan on the second playoff hole to take medalist honors.
The fourth-place finish marks Sherreard's third top-five of his career. He previously finished tied for third at the 2008 Hartford Invitational and finished alone in fourth at the 2008 CAA Championships.
Possibly of greater importance for the Panthers moving ahead, the finish is Sherreard's best at a season-opening event by 22 places. His previous best finish at a season-opening event was a tie for 26th at the 2008 Carpet Capital Collegiate.
In the team competition, Georgia State fired their best total of the week, a 298 (+10), in the final round. The Panthers earned a sixth place finish with scores of 314-301-298-911 (+49), two shots away from a tie for fourth.
The finish gives the Panthers a 6-5-0 record after their opening event with wins over Mercer, Jacksonville, San Jose St., College of Charleston, Tennessee St., and Winthrop. South Carolina took home the team title with a final tally of 300-280-289-869 (+5).
Junior Alan Fowler came away with a share of 28th place after posting 80-74-78-232 (+16). Juniors Brent Paul and Alex Castro each finished in 31st position after posting +17. Paul had rounds of 78-78-77-233 (+17), Castro carded 80-80-73-233 (+17).
Sophomore Jared Cagle continued to rebound after a disappointing first round by firing 78 on the final day. Cagle's three round total was 90-77-78-245 (+29), good for a share of 55th place.
The Panthers travel to Birmingham, Ala. next week for the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate at Old Overton Golf Club. Play begins October 12. Live stats for the event will be available at www.Golfstat.com.
