Tom Sherreard's top-10 finish led the Georgia State men's golf team through the opening two rounds at the Rees Jones Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,380 yard Jones Signature Course on Daufuskie Island, S.C. Monday.

Georgia State closed out the first round in eighth of 12 teams by posting a 314 (+26). South Carolina held an eight shot lead on the field at the end of round one with a 300 (+12).

In between the Panthers and the lead, at the end of round one, were Jacksonville (+20), Pepperdine (+22), Kennesaw St. (+23), Michigan State (+23), San Jose State (+25), and College of Charleston (+26).

Georgia State led UNC Wilmington (+28), Mercer (+30), Winthrop (+33), and Tennessee St. (+38) after 18 holes.

Senior Tom Sherreard finished in the top-10 with his first round 76 (+4). Brent Paul posted the next best score for the Panthers with a 78 (+6). Alan Fowler and Alex Castro each fired 80 (+8). Jared Cagle wrapped up round one with a 90 (+18).

Officials at the Rees Jones Intercollegiate made the decision to continue play in an attempt to finish the second round on day one. The vast majority of teams finished the second round, but a few groups remained on the course until suspension of play due to darkness.

In the second round, Georgia State moved up two spots to sixth of 12 teams. Four golfers finished the second round for Georgia State, with only Alan Fowler remaining on the course at +1 through 17 holes. The Panthers are +12 with one hole to play.

Sherreard moved into a share of seventh place with a second round 72 to stay at +4 with a 148. Fowler's +1 has him in a tie for 24th place, on pace for a 73 in round two.

Brent Paul finished the day in a tie for 29th with a score of 78-78-156 (+12). Alex Castro carded a pair of 80s to shoot +16 over the first 36 holes and earn a share of 38th place. Jared Cagle bounced back from an opening round 90 to shoot 77 to go 23-over par on day one and finish in 57th place.

South Carolina leads the way in the team competition at +4. Following South Carolina are Kennesaw St. (+26), Michigan St. (+31), UNC Wilmington (+32), Pepperdine (+32), Georgia State (+38), Mercer (+39), Jacksonville (+39), San Jose St. (+47), College of Charleston (+48), Tennessee St. (+57), and Winthrop (+62).
