Sherreard Top-20 at Rain-Shortened JPNI

Senior Tom Sherreard posted another strong finish, a share of 20th place, to lead Georgia State men's golf to a tie for 10th place at the rain-shortened Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate at the par 70, 7,204 yard Old Overton Club in Birmingham, Ala. Tuesday.

Heavy downpours on Monday forced tournament officials to shorten the event to a single round played on Tuesday morning.

Sherreard posted the low round for Georgia State, a 71 (+1). The Panthers turned in a team score of 290 (+10) to finish in a tie with Mississippi State for 10th place.

Juniors Alex Castro, Alan Fowler, and Brent Paul all posted rounds of 73 (+3), good for a tie in 36th place.

Paul struggled out of the gate going double-bogey, bogey, bogey over the first three holes. Regaining his composure, Paul managed to play the final 15 holes in 1-under par, carding three birdies.

Alex Castro had a similar experience in Birmingham, playing the opening nine in 4-over par before settling in for a 1-under back nine.

The highlight of Alan Fowler's day came on holes 15, 16, and 17 where the junior posted three consecutive birdies.

Tom Sherreard's round included an eagle at the 318-yard par four 15th.

Sophomore Jared Cagle posted a round of 77 (+7) to finish in a tie for 53rd place. Cagle bounced back after a front nine 40 to play the final nine holes of his round in 2-over par.

Alabama swept the awards at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, winning both the team and individual competitions. The Crimson Tide posted a team score of 273 (-7). Hunter Hamrick shot a 65 (-5) to earn the medalist honor.

Georgia State picks up a tie against Mississippi State and a win over Oklahoma on the afternoon.

The Panthers' next destination is Hawaii for the 2009 Turtle Bay Resort Invitational in Kahuku, Hawaii November 2-4.
