Lily Skelton connected with a three-run drive to left field in the nightcap to put Georgia State (36-16, 14-5 CAA) ahead of Drexel (27-19, 10-10 CAA), 8-5, while helping the Panthers sweep a pair of Colonial Athletic Association games from the Dragons, winning the first game 5-4 on Saturday at
Bob Heck Field.
Third basemen
Danielle Roddy finished the day batting 4-for-5 with one run batted in and two runs scored. Freshman catcher
Catherine Lee went 2-for-5, connecting with her 16th homer of the season and a double, scoring twice and driving in two runs. Adding to the run production was
Rebecca Roles, who connected with her first homerun of the season in the second game.
Madi Gore tossed the first win for State, allowing eight hits and one walk while fanning eight Dragon batters.
Alicia Mills picked up the nightcap, allowing only two hits and striking out six in her four innings of work.
The doubleheader sweep clinches second place for the Panthers. James Madison has a chance to share second with State, depending on tomorrow's outcome.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the first game when
Rachel Cunningham led the second inning off with a double to left center. She would later come around and score on a wild pitch.
The Panthers put up three more in the fourth as senior
Jessica Gowin led off the inning with a single to right field. Gowin would move to third off
Lauren Jones' single through the left side. Roles flew out to left field, scoring Gowin and moving Jones to second. Junior
Holly Willis came up with a single to left field, scoring Jones. On the next pitch, Willis stole second, putting her in scoring position. Roddy connected with a single which would score Willis from second, putting the score at 4-0.
Molly Dacey put Drexel on the board when she belted a solo homerun, her sixth of the season, in the top of the fifth. The following inning, Drexel rallied to score two more runs as Kristen Beaver legged out a bunt single, which brought home Dacey, who had doubled earlier in the inning. Lisa Williams singled with a runner on third, putting the Dragons with four runs. But it wasn't enough, as the Panthers had brought home a run in the bottom of the sixth, off an RBI single from Skelton.
In the second game, the Panthers fell behind early 3-0 when Molly Dacey, Ashley Botelho and Carla Waldron each connected with RBI singles after Rodriguez and Williams reached base earlier in the inning.
The Dragons put two more runs on the board before State began their rally in the bottom of the third. Roddy started it off with a single to the left side. Two batters later, Lee hit a bomb over center field. Skelton reached after being hit by a pitch, before Gowin singled. With two out and two on,
Rachel Cunningham hit a shot down the right field line, scoring both runners and putting the Panthers within one (5-4).
State held Drexel in the top of the fourth before adding three more runs when Skelton connected with a double to left field, scoring three Panther runners and giving State a 7-5 lead.
Roles' homer in the bottom of the sixth would give the Panthers an 8-5 edge.
The two teams conclude their three-game series Sunday at 12 noon at
Bob Heck Field. Precluding the game, seniors
Ashley Cowan and
Jessica Gowin will be recognized for their achievements during their career at Georgia State.
