Panthers in 7th, Sjoholm T3rd in US Collegiate

Led by sophomore Tom Sherreard's second-round score of 71 (-1), the 48th-ranked Georgia State University men's golf team moved into seventh place of the U.S. Collegiate Championship with a second-round team score of 296 (+8) on the Golf Club of Georgia's Lakeside Course in Alpharetta on Tuesday.

Sherreard jumped 25 spots to move into a tie for 19th with a two-round total of 148 (+4), while senior Joel Sjoholm, the fifth-ranked player nationally by GolfWeek.com, sits in a tie for third after a three birdie, second-round score of 73 (+1).

“Tom [Sherreard] played a very good round,” said Georgia State head golf coach Matthew Clark. “Joel [Sjoholm] showed his ability to recover today, birdying three of his last four holes to stay among the tournament's leaders. Those guys each played a good round on a challenging course.”

Sjoholm rests four stokes off the lead held by sixth-ranked Oklahoma State's Trent Leon, who holds a two-day total of 138 (-6).

When asked about Sjoholm's ability to climb the leaderboard in tomorrow's final round, Clark responded; “It wouldn't surprise me to see him play well tomorrow.”

Meanwhile, the Georgia State men's golf team moved up one position after posting the sixth-lowest team score of the day among the 15-team field that features eight of the nation's top 10 ranked teams.

“While we didn't have any extraordinarily low scores today, we played well as a team and moved up,” said Clark. “We need to go out tomorrow and continue to play well to finish where we want to finish and we intend to do that.”

The Panthers currently lead three teams ranked in the nationally top 10 and six teams from the top 50, most notably second-ranked Georgia and fourth-ranked Charlotte. State currently sits 13 strokes off the lead held by fifth-ranked Southern California and just two strokes behind their nearest competitor, 12th-ranked Florida State.

In addition to the strong performances by Sjoholm and Sherrerad, who ranks 77th nationally, junior Tim Freund and sophomore Maurice Jordan each posted scores of four-over par 76. Jordan (154, +10) finished round two in a tie for 47th, while Freund is tied for 63rd along with freshman Alex Castro (157, +13), who shot an 83 (+11) on day two.

The start of the second round was delayed 1-1/2 hours because of frost and cool weather but conditions improved Tuesday, with clear skies, calm winds and temperatures approaching 60 degrees, after chilling wind gusts and snow flurries on Monday.

Wednesday's final round begins at 9 a.m., and the three leading teams tee off beginning at 10:20 a.m. The Panthers begin teeing off at 11:20 a.m. on the 10th tee, led by Freund.

Live scoring for the event can be found at GolfStat.com, but Panther fans are encouraged to attend the event. For information on the U.S. Collegiate Championships visit TheUSCC.org.
