Sophomore Tom Sherreard carded a second-round score of even-par 70 to move into the top-30 overall as the 50th-ranked Georgia State University men's golf team posted a team score of 580 to finish day one in 13th place after 36 holes in the SunTrust Gator Invitational at Mark Bostick Golf Club in Gainesville, Florida.

Sherreard, a native of Great Britain, posted rounds of 71 and 70 in the first two rounds to complete day one in a tie for 27 with a total score of 141 (+1).

“Tom [Sherreard] played a solid round of golf today,” said Georgia State head coach Matt Clark.  “Unfortunately, he bogeyed his last hole today or he'd be a little better off.  But, there's one more day, and we'll see if he can put something together and move further up the board.”

Senior Joel Sjoholm, who is currently ranked 13th in the nation by GolfWeek.com , finished one stroke behind Sherreard in  a tie for 31st after rounds of 70 and 72 (142, +2).

Freshman Alex Castro finished in a tie for 61st after a strong first-round score of 73 and added just two more strokes in the second round with a score of 75 to finish with a first-day score of 148 (+8).  Rounding out State's five-man lineup were sophomore Maurice Jordan, who finished tied for 70th with a two-round score of 152 (+12, 76-76), and freshman Alan Fowler, who finished in 74th with a score of 155 (+15, 82-73).

“We didn't play our best today as a whole, but we have to just keep working hard and trying to get better every day,” added Clark.  “They don't start handing out the big championship trophies until April, and we'll be ready to play come April.  Looking to tomorrow, we just have to learn from today's lessons and try to go out and represent Georgia State and each member of this team to the fullest.”

Now, with two rounds of experience on the par-70, 6,701-yard course, the Panthers will look for greater success in their second day and third round on Sunday.    Third-round action will begin at 8 a.m. with players teeing off from the first and 10th holes.
