Two Panthers Finish in Top 30 at Florida

Senior Joel Sjoholm and sophomore Tom Sherreard finished tied for 28th with three-round scores of 215 (+5) at the SunTrust Gator Invitational, while the 50th-ranked Georgia State University men's golf team finished 14th with a team score of 888 at Mark Bostick Golf Club in Gainesville, Florida on Sunday.

Sjoholm, the 13th-ranked player nationally, and Sherreard shot rounds of 73 and 74 respectively to finish in the top-30 overall among a field of 75.  Both players carded two birdies in their final round.

Freshman Alex Castro posted a third-round score of 80 to finish tied for 68th at 228 (+18), while Maurice Jordan and Alan Fowler each shot rounds of 81 in the final day.   Jordan finished the tournament in 72nd (233, +23) and Fowler tied for 73rd (236, +26).

“I was really disappointed by the effort we gave today.  Finishing last and not even competing was beyond disappointing,” said Georgia State head coach Matt Clark.  “The players follow the example I set as a coach, so obviously, I have some work to do.

“I wanted our team to play with pride this weekend and we didn't,” continued Clark.  “A lot of former Panthers worked very hard to put Georgia State on the map.  Now, it's up to today's boys to keep it going, continue to build our tradition and make a lasting impression.  I have no doubt these kids can do it, but we just have to focus.  We have the talent to compete at a high level, but we have to work to get to where we expect to do it every week.”

The 14-team SunTrust Gator Invitational featured five teams ranked in the national top 25 and only one team outside the top 100.  Georgia State finished 15 strokes behind 13th-place South Florida.

The Panthers next head home to Atlanta for classes, before returning to action at the John Hyat Collegiate in Pointe Vedra, Florida, next Sunday, where North Florida will play host.

“We're going to work hard and have some serious discussion this week,” said Clark.  “This next tournament features some of the absolute best teams in the country and we're going to have to pull a quick turnaround to compete.  We're going to try to change some attitudes and see who wants to compete for Georgia State.”

The John Hyat Collegiate will feature top-ranked Alabama, Charlotte and Florida, among other competition.
