Wilmington, N.C. (October 8, 2008) Junior Stephan Minyono and freshman Jacob Hamilton netted the two Panther goals as the Georgia State men's soccer team fell 3-2 to the Seahawks from UNC Wilmington.
Both teams started off strong and battled for control as the score remained 0-0 until the 41st minute of the first half. The Panthers managed to get on the board first at 41:02 as midfielder Linus Warendh fed a pass to Hamilton, who scored on a header. That is Hamilton's first career goal.
Georgia State would lead 1-0 through halftime and up until the 58th minute when the Seahawk forward Nassim Berhouni scored on a penalty kick. The Panthers came back in the 64th minute off of another assist from Warendh as Minyono was able to make a short flick over the head of the UNC Wilmington keeper.
That marks Minyono's sixth goal of the season as he leads the Panthers in goals. The two assists brings Warendh's total to three on the season. “Stephan scored his sixth goal and it was nice to see freshman Jacob Hamilton score,” stated Georgia State coach Kerem Daser.
Berhouni drew UNCW level in the 76th minute on a second penalty kick when a Panther defender was whistled for a hand ball on a cross from the left flank. The Seahawks tried to break the deadlock following the tying goal, but missed a pair of shots from close range as senior goalkeeper Filipe Carvalho made two spectacular saves in a span of 34 seconds. Carvalho finished the contest with six saves.
Junior Donald Kirkland recorded three shots, while Warendh and Minyono each tallied two, and midfielder Joe DeVito, defender Brett Cummins, midfielder Joey Syfert, and Hamilton each logged a single shot.
“I thought that captain Joe DeVito had an amazing game. He has a super engine and was just outstanding,” remarked Daser. “We were up 1-0 at halftime and 2-1 with 15 minutes to go; it was disappointing to not keep the lead. I do credit UNC Wilmington for coming back and earning the win. Every game in the CAA is a battle and we did not play up to our potential tonight. We need to keep our heads up because it is a long season and we need to get focused on Drexel this weekend.”
The Panthers drop to 4-3-3 (0-1-2 CAA) on the season as they look ahead to Drexel over the weekend. The team travels to Philadelphia, Pa. on Saturday, October 11th and kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m. Check GeorgiaStateSports.com for all of the latest scores and updates.
