Atlanta, Ga. (October 4, 2008) Seniors Francesco Barbera and Dathan Knott scored a goal a piece as the Georgia State men's soccer team came away with a 2-2 tie against Northeastern in their second CAA conference match of the season to remain undefeated in their last five games. State (4-2-3, 0-0-2) played the two overtime periods a man down due to a player ejection.
The Huskies (3-2-4, 1-0-1) from Northeastern, who are ranked No. 10 in their region, managed to get on the board first in the 6th minute as senior Lewis Ehrlich deflected the ball off of Georgia State goalkeeper Filipe Carvalho's finger tips and over his head into the goal. The determined Panthers did not allow the Huskies to keep the lead for long; only about 20 minutes.
Senior Panthers Eduardo Liza and Joe DeVito were both credited with the assist on the Barbera goal. Liza aimed a corner kick to DeVito, who was able to get a foot on it to set up Barbera. This is Barbera's second career goal.
The second Panther goal came in the 37th minute as freshman Christopher Peacos crossed the ball to Knott, who recorded his third goal of the season, 14th career, to give host State a 2-1 advantage.
“It was very nice to see those two score our goals today. Dathan has been out injured for a couple of games, so it was good to see him come back and score a goal,” commented Georgia State coach Kerem Daser.
Northeastern didn't let the Panthers stay ahead for long. The Huskies scored in the 65th minute on a ball that was deflected off of the back of Lars Okland. The ball ricocheted off of the crossbar and went straight onto the dirt of the goal line before Carvalho could get a hand on it. “That was a crazy second goal,” remarked Daser. “It was disappointing to see, but I believe that Filipe made two huge saves for us today; one on a breakaway and one on the upper 90.”
The score would remain tied through the final minutes of regulation and both overtime periods.
The Panthers had to play the overtimes one man down as Peacos was ejected after receiving two yellow cards; the first in the 76th minute and the second with 56 seconds left to go in regulation.
“I think that we played a great first half this afternoon. We outshot Northeastern 17-8 and I think we were the better team out there today. Northeastern has had four straight shutouts and is a very organized and disciplined team,” remarked Daser. “I think that we showed character today, especially after being down a player for the two overtime periods. We have outshot our opponents in our two conference games, but haven't come away with a win yet. We need to work on playing to our maximum the full 90 minutes.”
The men's soccer team is back in action as they travel to UNC Wilmington on Wednesday, October 8th at 7 p.m. Check GeorgiaStateSports.com immediately following for results and statistics.
