ATLANTA, Ga. (October 22, 2008) Freshman Christopher Peacos scored the lone Panther goal as the Georgia State men's soccer team tied VCU 1-1 in double overtime Wednesday evening.
The Panthers (4-6-4, 0-4-3 CAA) started off with aggressive play and managed to get on the board first early on in the 14th minute. Senior midfielder Eduardo Liza aimed a free kick to defender Peacos who headed past Ram goalkeeper, Andrew Dykstra, and into the lower left corner of the net. That marks the first career goal for Peacos and Liza's fourth assist for the season.
"We scored a great goal froma header from Chris, which was a great service from Eduardo," commented Georgia State coach Kerem Daser.
The Panthers had several chances to add another goal to the board during the second period. In the 66th minute, senior Dathan Knott crossed the ball to midfielder Ayokunle Lumpkin who knocked towards the wide-open VCU goal, only to have Ram defender Michael Denkewitz outrun the ball and tap it past the left side of the goal. "We had the opportunity to score more goals tonight, but missed our chances," commented Daser.
Georgia State would keep the lead until the 82nd minute when Ram forward Jorit Loehr netted a rebound off of Panther goalkeeper Filipe Carvalho into the lower left corner. Carvalho finished the evening with seven saves, tying his season-high which occurred during the Wofford contest back on September 21st.
Leading the Panther offense were midfielders Linus Warendh, Joe DeVito, and Lumpkin who each tallied two shots for the night. Peacos and Knott are credited with a shot a piece. Despite the Rams outshooting the Panthers, 20-8, Georgia State came away with their third conference tie of the season.
"It was an exciting night at our Georgia State soccer stadium to witness our first soccer match under the lights. It was a battle against a very talented VCU team. It was great to have Eduardo back, but we are still missing starting players due to injury. We would like to thank all of the fans in this exciting CAA night game," finished Coach Daser.
Georgia State takes the field this Saturday at 7 p.m. as they host CAA rival George Mason. Livestats and the game recap will be available at www.GeorgiaStateSports.com
