Panthers Great Year Ends in 17th Place

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (June 1, 2007) -- The Georgia State men's golf team just missed the cut line and ended its season at the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship. The Panthers were in position to make the day three cut and advance to the final round of the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship after a third round score of 284. The cut came at 11-over and the Panthers finished at 12-over.

The Panthers opened their morning round starting on the back nine and battled through the tough stretch of holes. State could only manage to secure five birdies on the back nine coupled with six bogeys and a double bogey. Making the turn, the Panthers were ready to make a move and climb back up the leader board after dropping down as far as 20th-place.

Senior Ben Taylor was able to turn his round around on the front nine with three birdies, which put him at 2-under for his round with a 68. Taylor opened the NCAAs with 73 and has since found his game with an even-par 70 in the second round and a 68 in the third.

Junior Joel Sjoholm finished with a 1-under 69 to complete his third round. Sjoholm was able to birdie two holes on the front nine but bogeyed No. 9 to finish his round.

Freshman Tom Sherreard continued his solid play with a 3-over 73. Sophomore Mark Haastrup finished the third round with a 4-over 74. Senior Derek Oakey finished the third round with a 7-over 77.

"I am proud of the guys and the way they competed," said head coach Matt Clark. "They represented Georgia State all year. We had a great group of seniors with Ben Taylor, Derek Oakey and Morgan Nix. They helped put Georgia State on the map with three of four years making the NCAA Championships."

"We just had two bogeys on the last hole and that seemed to make the difference, but I am still proud of the way they competed all season long," Clark said.

State was able to finish in front of one top 10 team in Southern California, which finished at 14-over.

Stanford and Coastal Carolina continued to battle back and forth for the top spot throughout the third round. Stanford was able to hold on to the lead after a 5-under third round that puts the Cardinals at 12-under for the tournament. Coastal Carolina is two shots back at 10-under after an 8-under third round.

Notes:
If any Panther fans were able to watch the live feed of the third round from the NCAAs they would have been treated to some great coverage of the Panthers as they made the turn from the back nine. The hosts of the show from Golfweek TV even wondered which teams were the best dressed at this year's tournament. The nod went to the Georgia State golfers who donned Panther-blue pants today paired with white shirts.
