Golfers Advance to NCAA Championships

ALPHARETTA, Ga. (May 19, 2007) -- All it took was a little senior leadership for the Panthers to qualify for the NCAA National Championships.

On the final day of the NCAA Regionals at the Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, senior Ben Taylor led the charge with a three-under par 69 to spark the team to a final day one under par 287 to punch the ticket for an NCAA Championship spot by finishing 9th and being one of the 10 teams in the East Regional to move on.

"We played a great round of golf today," said head coach Matt Clark. "We played the18th hole at 5-under par, and the 1st hole at 5-under par today. Today was the day of the big bird with all the eagles flying everywhere. You can't win the national championship without a tee time, and we have a tee time."

Taylor's final day 69 came just 24 hours after a rough 80 round the day before. The senior from England carded not one, but two eagles Saturday to go with three birdies, including one on his final hole of the day.  Junior Joel Sjoholm added a two-under 70 with six birdies, including one on the final hole, with sophomore Mark Haastrup posting a one-under 71 with two eagles of his own. Senior Derek Oakey added a five-over final day round with three more birdies.

Georgia State, competing in its eighth NCAA Regional in the past nine years, will now move on to its fourth NCAA Championships where only 30 teams play.

The Panthers final day 287 was the fourth lowest score on the final day of the 54-hole event in Atlanta's northern suburb.

For the tournament, Sjoholm led the team with a 219, +3, with Haastrup next at 221.

The Panthers will compete in the NCAA Championships May 27-June 2 in Williamsburg, Va.
