ALPHARETTA, Ga. (May 18, 2007) -- The 16th-ranked Georgia State men's golf team is tied for 11th after a second round of 304 and is 17-over at the NCAA East Regional at the Golf Club of Georgia.

In the second round, scores soared as only three teams were able to fire rounds under par. State is one shot out of clinching a berth to the NCAA Championships entering the final round. Georgia holds the overall lead at 2-under.

"We got off to decent start through the first 11 holes and unfortunately we lost nine balls in water hazards through the next eight holes," said head coach Matt Clark. "We played well enough in the first round to keep us still in. All in all, it was still a decent day. It was just a nightmare through those last holes."

For the Panthers, junior Joel Sjoholm led the team with a 3-over 75. Sjoholm is tied for 45th. Senior Derek Oakey and Tom Sherreard shot rounds of 4-over 76. Oakey and Sherreard are tied for 25th. Sophomore Mark Haastrup finished with a 5-over 77 and senior Ben Taylor ended with an 8-over 80. Haastrup is tied for 56th and Taylor is tied for 113th.

"On the last hole, Derek and Tom both birdie, and Mark made about a 40-footer for par, so it was a good way to finish," Clark said.

State will tee off for the final round at 8:05 a.m. starting on the 10th tee. Golfstat will provide live scoring of the event.
