ALPHARETTA, Ga. (April 9, 2007) -- The Georgia State men's golf team sits tied for fifth-place after firing an opening round of 298 at the U.S. Collegiate Championships at the Golf Club of Georgia. Junior Joel Sjoholm sits tied for third and is one-shot back of the leaders after an opening round of 1-under-par 71.

Host team, Georgia Tech, is tied for first-place with the defending champion Clemson after opening with a 292.

Senior Ben Taylor opened with a 1-over-par 73 and is tied for 13th-place. Sophomore Mark Haastrup and freshman Tom Sherreared fired a pair of 77s and are tied for 45th-place. Senior Derek Oakey shot a 79 and is tied for 56th-place.

State will tee-off at 12:27 and is paired with Florida State and BYU for round two action.
