HOT SPRINGS, Va. (April 22, 2007) -- The Georgia State men's golf team fought hard to capture first-place but finished in second-place after a final round of 281 and a tournament total 863.
Old Dominion took home the title finishing four shots better than the Panthers with an 859. State still expects to earn an at-larger bid to the NCAA Regionals based on their top 25 ranking throughout the season.
"I am proud of the way we came out today and posted the lowest final round total," said head coach Matt Clark. "It just wasn't enough. Old Dominion played a great tournament and matched all our great shots with some of their own."
Junior Joel Sjoholm finished tied for second-place after a final round of 71. Sjoholm recorded a three-round total of 214, which was four shots behind medalist John Murphey of Old Dominion. Sjoholm earned All-Tournament honors for his performance.
Sophomore Mark Haastrup tied for ninth-place after a final round of 75 and a 218 total. Freshman Tom Sherreard and senior Derek Oakey finished tied for 12th-place with 219 totals. Oakey fired a new career-lowest score of 67 in the final round and Sherreard also recorded a new career-low with a 68.
Senior Ben Taylor finished tied for 17th-place after a final round of 76 and a 221 total.
"Derek and Tom led us coming out of the gates with the two lowest rounds," Clark said. "Joel had another strong finish and showed why he was the CAA Golfer of the Year. We have a chance now to come back home and get ready for Regionals."
State will compete in the Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, Ga. May 13-14 before the NCAA Regionals May 17-19.
