Panthers Move Into Fourth Heading to Final

ALPHARETTA (April 10, 2007) -- The Georgia State men's golf team was able to move up one spot into a tie for fourth-place after the second round at the U.S. Collegiate Championships at the Golf Club of Georgia. State fired a 302 for its second round total.

The Panthers are nine shots out of first-place Georgia and seven shots behind second-place Clemson.

"It was an extremely tough day," said head coach Matt Clark. "The course got extremely firm and fast for the last groups playing today. It was a mental grind, but I was proud of the way they hung in there."

State does have two members vying for medalist honors. Junior Joel Sjoholm and senior Ben Taylor are both tied for fourth-place at 2-over-par for the tournament. Clemson's Tanner Ervin holds the lead at even-par for the tournament. Taylor led the Panthers in the second round with a 1-over-par 73. Sjoholm fired a 3-over-par 75 in the second round.

"It was an exceptional finish for Ben," Clark said. "He finished with a birdie on the last hole and Joel has played solid the whole week. Hopefully, we can get together as a team and have a strong finish tomorrow."

Freshman Tom Sherreard had an up and down day. Sherreard eagled his first hole and finished the front nine at even-par. On the back, Sherreard was under-par through three holes until a double-bogey at the 13th. He finished with a 75 on the day and is tied for 29th-place.

Sophomore Mark Haastrup is tied for 62nd-place after an 81 in the second round. Senior Derek Oakey finished with a 79 and is tied for 62nd-place.

"We got a good chance for tomorrow," Clark said. "I am glad we are not in last group and we can go out and post a number and have some of the other teams chase it."

The final round will take place Wednesday at the Golf Club of Georgia.
