Panthers Snag Tie For Fourth

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 20, 2007) -- The Georgia State men's golf team wrapped up the final round of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational with a 297 giving them a three round total of 899, which tied for fourth-place along with 10th-ranked UCLA, UCF and UAB.

State finished ahead of two top-25 teams with No. 9-ranked Tennessee finishing in ninth-place and No. 25-ranked Charlotte finishing in 11th-place.

“We hung in there today and finished with a good round,” said head coach Matt Clark. “We tried to make up some ground but it was a strong field.”

Alabama went wire-to-wire and finished with a three-round total of 881. UCLA's Kevin Chappell took home medalist honors finishing the tournament 2-under with a 214 total.

Sophomore Joel Sjoholm recorded his seventh career top-10 finish, tying for sixth-place, after firing a final round of even par 72. Sjoholm finished 5-over for the tournament with a 221 total.

Freshman Tom Sherreard made the biggest move. After starting the tournament with a 77 and a 75, Sherreard fired a final round of 1-under 71, matching his career-best third round score and earning a new career-best finish of 11th-place. Sherreard finished 7-over with a 223 total.

“I am proud of Joel and Tom's performance,” Clark said. “It is great for Joel to get another top-10 finish and for Tom to earn a new best finish.”

Sophomore Mark Haastrup finished tied for 25th-place after a final third round score of 76, which gave him a three round total of 226. Senior Ben Taylor finished tied for 36th-place after a final round of 78 and a 229 total. Senior Derek Oakey finished in 76th-place with a final round of 79 and a 243 total. Freshman Maurice Jordan finished tied for 36th as an individual after a final round of 74 and a 229 total.

“We still have a long ways to go to compete for a National Championship, but we will continue to work hard,” Clark said.

State will face Pepperdine March 7-8 in Palm Desert, Calif.
