JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 18, 2007) -- The Georgia State men's golf team is in third place at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational after a first round total of 305. The Panthers are two shots behind first-place team Alabama which finished round one with a 303 total.
"This was one of the toughest days I have had in college golf," said head coach Matt Clark. "This is an extremely tough golf course. It was extremely cold and windy all day, but we showed a lot of heart and continued to grind."
Sophomore Mark Haastrup leads the Panthers after and opening round of 75. Haastrup is tied for fifth-place and three shots behind the individual leaders Kevin Chappell of UCLA and Shane Mason of Pepperdine who both finished with an even-par 72.
Senior Ben Taylor sits tied for 16th-place with a 4-over 76. Junior Joel Sjoholm and freshman Tom Sherreard both ended with 5-over 77s. Sjoholm and Sherreard are tied for 23rd-place. Senior Derek Oakey finished with a 9-over 81 and is tied for 58th.
The Panthers will tee it up tomorrow morning for the second round of the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at Sawgrass Country Club with the final round on Tuesday.
