GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 11, 2007) -- The Georgia State men's golf team finished tied for seventh-place after a final round total of 293 at the SunTrust Gator Invitational. The Panthers finished 31-over (292-286-293--871) for the tournament and finished ahead of three teams -- Purdue (26th), Kentucky (41st) and UCF (44th) -- ranked in the top 50.
Host school, Florida, took the top honors with a 10-over performance for the tournament.
Junior Joel Sjoholm led the team in final round firing a 1-under 69 putting him tied for 12th (71-74-69--214). Senior Ben Taylor ended the third round with a 3-over 73 and finished tied for 20th (75-68-73--216). Freshman Maurice Jordan finished with a 4-over 74 and tied for 52nd (77-74-74--225). Senior Derek Oakey and freshman Tom Sherreard both shot final rounds of 77. Oakey finished tied for 30th (71-71-77--219). Sherreard ended tied for 52nd (75-73-77--225).
"Ben's 68 in the second round and Joel's 69 today were some great rounds of golf on a tough golf course," said head coach Matt Clark. "We have to get better as a team from top to bottom and it is my job to get them to perform at a high level. We have a lot of work to do this week until we get ready to head for Jacksonville."
State will return to action Feb. 18 at the John Hyat Collegiate Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla.
