GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 10, 2007) -- The Georgia State men's golf team sits in seventh-place at 18-over-par?after a second round total of 286 at the SunTrust Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. State is 10 shots out of first-place Wake Forest, which finished the day at 8-over-par.
The Panthers sat alone in ninth-place with a 292 total?after the morning round concluded. Senior Derek Oakey and junior Joel Sjoholm led the way with a pair of 1-over 71s. Senior Ben Taylor and freshman Tom Sherreard ended the first round with 5-over 75s and freshman Maurice Jordan finished with a 7-over 77.
"We got off to an extremely bad start in the first round, but the guys regrouped and performed better in the second round," said head coach Matt Clark.
State came out determined in the second round and closed the day with a 286 total. Taylor rebounded from his morning?round and?fired a 2-under 68 to lead the team in the second round. Taylor sits tied for 20th-place.
Oakey remained consistent throughout the day and closed with a 1-over 71, which puts him tied for 11th-place. Sherreard is tied for 48th-place and?ended the second round with a 3-over 73. Sjoholm is tied for 29th-place and finished the second round with a 4-over 74. Jordan closed out his second round with a 4-over 74 and is tied for 54th-place.
"I am really proud of Ben and Derek's performances today," Clark said. "The guys understand that their games are rusty, but we are going to come out?tomorrow and look to play a solid round of golf and hopefully move up."
State will wrap up the final round on Sunday. Golf Stat will provide live scoring.
