Georgia State senior Joel Sjoholm finished tied for 11th after final-round score of even-par 71 in the Western Refining College All-American Golf Classic at El Paso Country Club and finished ahead of the nation's top-ranked player, Chesson Hadley of Georgia Tech, in El Paso, Texas on Tuesday.
Sjoholm, the seventh-ranked player in the country, finished the event with a three-round score of 210 (-3) in the invitation-only event featuring the last season's All Americans and select invitees by the Sun Bowl Association.
Sjoholm, one of three Swedish natives playing in the event, was named a PING/GCAA third-team All American a year ago.
“I didn't play my best round today and made a mistake, which cost me a few strokes, but I am still pleased with my finish,” said Sjoholm, who has a record of 277-28-5 against the field this season. “It has been an honor to play in this event and everything about the event was amazing. It was truly a class event.”
The Panthers top golfer carded two birdies in his final round, but double bogeyed the par-four 16th to fall to even par in his final 18 holes.
Sjoholm's 11th-place finish is the highest placing by a Georgia State golfer in the event, topping Mark Haastrup's 15th-place finish in last year's event.
The All-American Classic was Georgia State's last event of the fall and Sjoholm finished in the top-11 places of each tournament he participated in this season, including a victory at the Club Glove Intercollegiate in Somis, California.
Each university with a golfer participating in the All American is awarded a $1,000 scholarship in that student athlete's name.
The Panthers will now take the winter to practice and return to action in February at the SunTrust Gator Invitational.
