Sjoholm Makes 2nd Round Charge at All-America

EL PASO, Texas ? Senior men's golfer Joel Sjoholm used a second-round charge at the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic to finish the opening day tied for 11th after shooting 3-under par for the day.

The native of Gothenburg, Sweden, was inconsistent during the opening round. He fired four birdies, but also registered three bogeys and two double-bogeys to finish the first round 4-over par and tied for 24th with two other players.

But playing like the No. 10 ranked golfer in the nation, Sjoholm regrouped heading into the afternoon session and started the second round with six consecutive birdies off the back nine. He tallied just one bogey and finish 5-under par on those nine holes. Following the turn, Sjoholm registered a birdie on the 420-yard No. 1 and finished his day with a birdie on the 534-yard No. 9. After shooting four birdies during the opening round, Sjoholm fired nine during the second round with just two bogeys.

San Diego State's Aaron Goldberg (66-67=133), who is ranked 68th in the nation, finished the day 9-under and holds a one-stroke lead over Wake Forest's Webb Simpson (62-72=134) and Oklahoma State's Trent Leon (69-65=134). Sjoholm (71-64=139) sits tied for 11th with Clemson's Kyle Stanley (71-68=139).

In one of the events leading up to the tournament, Sjoholm finished tied for third with a blast of 319 yards in the longest drive contest held Sunday, Nov. 18. He also finished tied for sixth in the putting contest.

The elite two-day tournament, which features returning All-Americans from last season and the top-30 golfers in the country, wraps up tomorrow morning. The 28-player field tees off at 10 a.m. Eastern.
