Senior Joel Sjoholm posted a final-round score of 67 (-4) to finish tied for ninth and Georgia State carded the second lowest round of the day to move into a tie for seventh place in the last round of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Alabama on Tuesday.

Sjoholm, the 2006-07 Colonial Athletic Association Golfer of the Year who is currently ranked 15th nationally as an individual by GolfWeek, shot his second round of 67 in the tournament to finish with a three-round total of 205 (-8).  The finish marked the native of Sweden's third straight top-10 finish in as many events to open the season.

In addition to Sjoholm's effort, each scoring member of the Georgia State golf team shot under par in the final round as the Panthers defeated two teams ranked in the top-30 nationally in the 12-team field.

Georgia State's final-round score of 277 was only trumped by host Alabama who shot a 272 in the final round on their home course, Old Overton Club, a par-71, 6,958 yard course. 

“As a team, we put it together in the final round and played strong,” said Georgia State head coach Matt Clark.  “For the third straight week we've gone out and faced some of the elite teams in the country and we are starting to improve and work towards that level.  We have a ways to go, but I'm encouraged by how we played today.”

In addition to Sjoholm, two other Panthers finished in the top-30 places, sophomores Tom Sherread (T-23, 211, -2) and Maurice Jordan (T-29, 213, E).

The Panthers take some time off before returning to action on Oct. 22 at the two-day Club Glove Intercollegiate in Somis, California.  Check GeorgiaStateSports.com for updates prior to the event.
