Georgia State freshman Alan Fowler defeated Florida State's Bradley Ruch 4 and 2, but the Georgia State men's golf was unable to prevail in a tough match with sixth-ranked Florida State and fell 3-1-1 in their second contest of the Callaway Match Play Championships at Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro.
The Panthers, who played without 10th-ranked Joel Sjoholm, dropped three matches, won one and tied one against the seventh-seeded Seminoles in the team's first match of the consolation bracket after falling to second-ranked Alabama in the team's first match.
In addition to Fowler's victory, sophomore Tom Sherreard halved his match with Florida State's Drew Kittleson, while junior Tim Fruend and freshman Alex Castro each lost 3 and 1 and sophomore Maurice Jordan fell 4 and 2.
The Match Play Championships at Reynolds Plantation, a par-72, 7,299-yard layout, feature a format that varies from the typical college tournament where teams count the best four of five scores from each day on a stroke basis. Instead, the Championship format matches each team's players in head-to-head competition on each hole, with the winner of more holes winning the match.
The Callaway Match Play Championships, which feature 16 teams that finished in the top 17 at the NCAA Nationals last year, were the last team meet for the Panthers in the fall season. Sjoholm will compete in the Western Refining All American in November.
At the end of the fall season, the Panthers have moved up to 56th in the GolfWeek.com rankings with a team lineup often consisting of one senior, two sophomores and two freshman, leaving anticipation for future growth and success. Georgia State is currently the highest ranked team in the Colonial Athletic Association and Old Dominion is their closest conference mate at 63rd.
