Senior Joel Sjoholm carded a second-round score of even-par 72 to claim sole possession of first as the Georgia State University men's golf team sits in third with a two-round team score of 615 (+39) after the first day of competition at the Club Glove Intercollegiate in Somis, California.
Sjoholm recorded three birdies and three pars in a balanced second round that allowed the ninth-ranked player in the country to jump from a first-round third-place tie into the tournament lead at one-over par. The native of Sweden will enter the third and final round with a three-stroke lead on Loyola Marymount's Jason D'Amore, who is four-over par (148).
The Panthers sit in third overall and one stroke behind second-place Loyola Marymount (614) and three Georgia State golfers are currently in the top 15. Host Pepperdine holds a nine-stroke lead on Georgia State at 606 (+30).
In addition to Sjoholm, sophomores Tom Sherreard and Maurice Jordan are tied at 14th with two-round scores of 156 (+12). Sherreard posted consecutive rounds of 78, while Jordan climbed from 39th in 14th after a second-round score of two-over par 74.
Freshman Alan Fowler is also having a strong showing for the Panthers and is currently tied for 21st at 14-over par (148).
The Club Glove, held at Saticoy Country Club, a par-72 6,405-yard layout, features five teams in the top-50 nationally. Leader Pepperdine is ranked 20th nationally, while Georgia State currently leads 11th-ranker Lamar and three teams ranked in the 40s ? Louisiana State (46th), Memphis (47) and UC-Santa Barbara (48).
Saticoy Country Club has yielded only two sub-par rounds, both one-under par 71s shot in the first round, and the tournament has seen 53 scores of 80 or higher in a two rounds from the field of 62. The field battled extremely tough conditions as the wind gusts from the Santa Ana winds that have plagued Southern California caused havoc. In addition, smoke from the fires throughout the area made it difficult for the players to breathe and prevented one group from finishing play.
The tournament also features 10 players ranked in the top-100 nationally, including Sjoholm, and six players in the top 50.
